Student Legal Resources
Occasionally UCSF students encounter problems that require legal assistance.
The non-profit resources listed below are provided as a courtesy to UCSF
students. The OSL and UCSF does not
sponsor or endorse any of these resources by virtue of listing them on this
site.
1. UCSF Problem Resolution Center (www.ucsf.edu/resolve)
Though many problems require legal expertise, some problems may be able to be resolved on a more informal basis. The UCSF Problem Resolution Center (PRC) offers an alternative approach to conflict resolution without legal action by providing innovative resources to students and other members of the UCSF community.
The PRC offers neutral services, as well as other strategic and confidential resources, to assist students with conflict prevention and resolution. Mediation, one of the core services offered by the PRC, provides an impartial, voluntary and confidential process emphasizing open communication and creative problem-solving, facilitated by trained neutral mediators.
This service won't apply to all legal problems students may encounter while enrolled at UCSF. However, in some cases, it may provide a suitable alternative to more complicated and costly legal action.
2. Self Help Legal Library for UCSF Students
The OSL maintains a lending library of outstanding self-help legal books from Nolo Press. These easy to use books have been selected to address typical legal problems students may encounter. View our collection to see a complete description of what each book has to offer.
Students may check out the books for two-week periods of time. To borrow a book,
please contact us.
3. Lawyer Referral and Consultation Service (www.sfbar.org)
The Bar Association of San Francisco offers excellent lawyer referral services and low cost consultation service.
The Lawyer Referral section provides an explanation about the referral process that includes a 30-minute consultation for only $25.
4. NOLO Law For All (www.nolo.com)
The Nolo Law For All Web site is recognized as the one of the best legal self-help resources on the Web. Here you will find information about diverse areas of law and valuable information, resources and tools to help you navigate through most legal problems. Information about most areas of the law can be found in the Law Center on the left side of the Nolo home page. In each of the law centers you will find easy to use information, FAQs, Ask Auntie Nolo, definitions, legal articles, forms, etc. about diverse areas of law.
Though legal products, software, forms and other resources are sold on the !eb site, there is a great deal of unbiased, user-friendly, down-to-earth, in-plain-English information that UCSF students are sure to find useful.
5. LawHelpCalifornia (www.LawHelpCalifornia.org)
The primary goal of LawHelpCalifornia.org is to provide the public with easy Internet access to basic legal information and legal resources in California. Here you will find clear explanations about legal matters and referrals to on-line and community based resources.
